Should You Choose the Magento 2 or Shopify Ecommerce Platform?

So you are looking for a new webshop. Awesome! Now you only need to choose the platform on which the webshop will run. And that is not an easy choice. On this page, I will tell you about the differences between Magento and Shopify and why we think you should choose Magento.

Similarities Between Magento and Shopify

First, briefly, the similarities between Magento and Shopify:

  • Both are Open Source webshop platforms.
  • Both offer various options with which a webshop can be set up.

Differences Between Magento and Shopify

But the similarities generally end there. It isn't easy to find the right reasons for choosing due to the amount of information offered about both parties. I list the differences below.

  • Creative freedom: Magento is a very flexible platform. Thousands of extensions can be used for all kinds of things. But customisation is also very easy to apply. This is what we often apply at Aware Digital. Our magento development agency first create a unique design for your Magento shop, and then we use custom code to meet all your wishes. Shopify offers several standard templates that you can choose from. This puts a lot of pressure on your creative freedom and results in a shop that looks the same as any other Shopify shop. Not the best start to impress with your webshop!
  • Technical flexibility: As mentioned, it is relatively easy to build custom solutions in Magento. It is an Open Source platform, which means that anyone can - and may - develop on it. The code from which Magento is built is a standard code language that many developers can write. Shopify is also Open Source but is set up in a different coding language, which a lot fewer developers can write. So it's harder to find programmers! Besides, Magento is free to use. You do not pay any license costs. You pay that at Shopify, in the first case, a monthly amount that is relatively low when you have a small shop, but many entrepreneurs quickly grow. The follow-up packages are many times more expensive than the starter package.
  • Growth: Ultimately, your goal is to grow your webshop, right? More visitors, more products, more sales and more turnover! Magento is prepared for that. There is practically no limit to functionalities you can add; if you want to add an extra language or currency, that is possible. If you're going to open an extra webshop managed from the same Magento installation, that is possible. If you want a separate part for B2B customers with different customer groups and price lists, that is possible. Order management, complex composite, configurable products, links with financial packages or product management systems, it is all possible. In contrast, Shopify is limited; it is built for B2C and cannot handle the complexity of B2B orders. Subsites, order management or complex product catalogs are not supported. And each installation can only process one language and currency. If you want to offer your Shopify shop in multiple languages, you need numerous (pricey) licenses.
  • Project lead time: The lead time for setting up your new webshop depends, of course, on your wishes. If an existing template is sufficient for you, which others may also use, you can have a simple shop on both platforms within a few days. However, if you need a custom design, unique elements such as calculators or links with external systems, then this is not feasible in Shopify. Magento can handle all of this, although you will also get a longer lead time as you want more custom elements.

All in all, it remains, of course, your choice for which platform you choose. Do you want something ready quickly, and do you not have such extensive wishes? Then Shopify might be for you. But if you want something that can take you into the future, that is expandable and flexible enough for new needs - whatever those needs are? Then Magento is the best match.
